I had two cats who would go walking in the redwoods with me. One of them had very good built-in CPS (Cat Positioning System). There was a long, curving, logging road that led down to a pond. If they were at the pond and I were at the top of the road, ready to go home, I would call to them. Kirby would see me and come to me laboriously via the line-of-sight route through bushes and around trees. In the meantime, Johnny Depp would dash up the curve of the road to join me. He would then meow impatiently for Kirby to catch up.

I had a cat that did this to a dachshund once. Although he had his claws deep into the poor dog.
