I have no illusions that my cat understands what I say. If I say, “Eggs”, she perks up but she doesn’t really know what’s coming until the saucer of egg yolk appears.
At the end of a walk I tell her, “I’m going inside now.” She merely interprets that as an announcement that something is about to happen. When she sees me walking toward the door, she then decides whether to come with me or not.
