I used to leave some kibble out overnight but other cats and skunks would come in through the cat flap. I try to feed my cat before bedtime, then take up all the food.
If my cat is too busy to remind me to feed her in the evening, she will come in after midnight and start singing the “My Food Bowl is Empty at 2 AM Blues”. She will not be persuaded to come into the bedroom and accept petting as a substitute. It has a LOT of choruses. It is very effective. :)

My Gracie doesn’t get loud. She just gets annoying. Little accusatory mews until she gets her way.
