Again?!? I can’t believe poor Red got gifted underwear even once. He’s far too young to appreciate silk boxers, and those were the days (the 60’s) before boys’ underwear even had designs, wasn’t it?
He can explain to his mother that he would like one less present to open on Christmas from now on, and not to wrap up his underwear that he needs. Some kids like to have needed items just to have more gifts to open and some don’t. Red seems to be a don’t, and I am sure his mom can accommodate that.
I was curious if this strip was set a bit too early for this usage of the phrase “go commando”. So I looked it up: “Slate magazine’s Daniel Engber dates the modern usage to United States college campuses circa 1974, where it was perhaps associated with soldiers in the Vietnam War, who were reputed to go without underwear to ‘increase ventilation and reduce moisture.’” So it’s kinda borderline – unless maybe Red’s brother has been hanging with college kids or the military. It seems unlikely he would have heard the phrase in ordinary conversations.

Mom always says that when you go out, “Make sure you’re wearing clean underwear.” … “… in case you’re in an accident.”
She doesn’t say this, but it’s also for “in case you have an accident.”

Rover goes commando all the time.

I like Red but I don’t think he’s cut out to be a Commando. He’s more likely to be a scientist like his Dad or a cartoonist like Brian Basset.
