Lately it seems to be trendy [on LinkedIn] to diss degrees. Quite a lot of “what is better, a degree or experience?” posts… Usually posted by people with 15 years of experience and an MBA. Seriously…. Get real. A degree is a means to land your first job and start earning that experience. Yes, you can get a job and get experience without a degree too, but it’s probably easier if you can show some qualifications. And in some cases it’s mandatory to have the right degree? Who do you trust to do surgery on your dog, a licensed veterinarian with an actual degree? Or somebody who’s “never been to school but I’ve been doing tplo surgery on dogs since I was 16”?
I don’t know… Maybe I’m being overly sensitive, but this just seems like clear anti-intellectualism to me. It’s just the same old “My smarts are better than your smarts”.
It’s just disguised snobbery.
Sure, I’ve seen people with college degrees fail to understand simple things. However, I’ve also seen people without college degrees fail to understand simple things. I can’t understand quantum physics and I’ve failed at two college educations. That doesn’t mean I’m better at handling real life. It just means that I’m too stupid to handle a college education. And I’m honest enough to admit that fact.
I very much dislike the idea that you won’t be able to handle real life just because, bookwise, you’re an intelligent person. Or that “book smarts” just involves knowing “a lot of facts about that tree”.
You know what book smart people have done? Cured my aunt’s cancer. Completely. She’s been cancer free for a decade. But yeah. Some of them just stand around knowing tree facts too. Sure.

Both kinds of smarts have a place in life; an aliquot of each is a good way to go.

I’ve worked many of people with higher degrees than mine that were clueless about some pretty simple concepts.

Teamwork and cooperation are often better than competition.
Especially if you team up with the right person to compete against everyone else.
