like every parliament – every politician is “really” aiming for the public interest, and yet the public is always screwed up by them

I worked summers in heavy construction during college. One summer the Union rep wanted me to join the Hod Carriers and Laborers Local Union. Initiation and dues would cost me a lot just for summer work. I got harassed by visits almost weekly until the rep threatened to shut the site down. I sat in the union rep’s car and negotiated. I paid him $75 cash and he would looked the other way that summer. Pretty reasonable guy. /s. The next summer I worked underground stripping cement forms for a large storm drain just to so the Union rep couldn’t find me.

Take care of all the small things and the big things will be taken care of.

This is pretty close to the way contract negotiations are conducted.
