Many of the shows that Roy has talked about have been obscure to me, but John was watching them. I don’t know if John watched Doc Martin, so this is my choice, and I knew it would be unknown to some readers. We can’t guess what readers know or don’t know, so we can’t avoid that.
Doc Martin, played by Martin Clunes, began as a supporting character in the movie SAVING GRACE. A London physician relocated to the Cornish coast, he was a breakout character, and was spun off into two made-for-TV movies. When the creators pursued the idea of a series, the ITV network requested that the character be changed. He was made grumpier, and stripped of all intrapersonal skills, to make him a fish out water. It clicked, and the show ran for ten series. It became an international hit, and many countries (Germany, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Holland, Greece and others) produced their own versions.
It began in 2004 and has aired in the US since at least 2010. So it’s pretty famous, even if some folks have missed it.
I know it takes all kinds to make a world, and I will defend to the death anyone’s freedom of choice when it comes to TV, but there have been some very popular shows that make me want to pull my hair out, and Doc Martin was one of them. Maybe this is some mental deficiency on my part. Other examples would be House, and Monk. I know Monk always gets his man, but I want to shake him til his teeth rattle! I did watch an episode a couple of weeks ago, but only because I discovered before flipping the channel that Monk was trying to clear Willie Nelson (as himself) of a murder charge. I can put up with a lot for Willie…

I had to look up Doc Martin too, from what I read he makes great shoes and boots. (Kidding).

Love the coastal Britain setting…and I see “the Good Doctor” becoming Martin like as he ages.

I loved that series, and hated to see it end.
