A new monk arrived at the monastery. He was assigned to help the other monks in copying the old texts by hand. He noticed, however, that they were copying copies, not the original books. The new monk went to the head monk to ask him about this. He pointed out that if there were an error in the first copy, that error would be continued in all of the other copies.
The head monk said, ‘We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son.’ The head monk went down into the cellar with one of the copies to check it against the original.
Hours later, nobody had seen him, so one of the monks went downstairs to look for him. He heard a sobbing coming from the back of the cellar and found the old monk leaning over one of the original books, crying.
He asked what was wrong.
‘The word is ‘celebrate,’ not ‘celibate’!’ sobbed the head monk.
In my teen years and until I got married, I practiced abstinence. It wasn’t any great morality on my part, it was fear. I knew I wasn’t ready for the responsibility of children and the surest way to avoid creating another human was to abstain.
This verifies something I said when Luann’s mother gave her the “talk” when Luann was dating Quill. She just gave a “wait until marriage” speech, with no information about safe sex, protection with contraceptives or how to avoid STDs. I said at the time that the comic was directed towards a very conservative older religious demographic and apparently that has been true much earlier than I thought.
Tell that to the adolescent who is starved for affection, seeks it from a boy who says he loves her until he holds her down and forces her. Then says “She got herself”…
At the time, and probably still, that statistic was being used to advocate teaching (how to practice safe sex, paraphrasing) in schools. The stated pregnancies also included those teens that were already married; no one ever knew the exact proportion of married to unmarried pregnancies.

Funny how this contrasts with B’s current obsession with ‘romance fiction’…

Good for them. And true, for Brad at this point it’s a non issue. Just when did he change into a good looking guy?

It may still be an “issue” for him today seeing that Shannon shies up if he so much as thinks about “doing it.”

Obsession with and falling prey to it, are different sides of the coin.
