Academic fraud in research papers was extremely rare until the last quarter century or so. Although many countries have now had cases, my opinion is that today China universities represent the plurality of the suspect papers. Because of this, if I see that any of the authors are from China universities , I ignore the study.
We have that here in the US, too! It’s called the CDC, who stopped tracking some of the measures we used to use for the first two years of covid. The only real way epidemiologists can figure out how it’s spreading now is to analyze the data from wastewater treatment plants who track covid in the water supply.
