The first day of spring is March 21st. From Ground Hog Day, February 2nd, that is 6 1/2 more weeks of winter.

Aha! Norman finally said something right. Badgers are not rodents.

The main difference is that there’s more dark meat on a badger….

Looking at Norm’s expression in the final panel you can definitely tell that he favors his father’s side of the family!

Winter has been pretty good here for the most part. But we’re gonna get two days of BRRRRR! Then there will be a rebound to warmer. The people who love snow and ice and power outages and massive traffic accidents are upset though.

Here in the SW, we could use several more good snow storms before spring. The water level at Lake Powell is so low that soon they won’t be able to generate electricity. Ironically, California is unable to capture the water from their recent torrential rains.

Even the best groundhog is wrong more often than a coin toss. But, it gives the folks in snow country something to do in public; V. Day, not so much.

I have always wondered what would make a rational human trust a groundhog as a weather forecaster. Having lived in the frozen Midwest for 25 years, now I know. Their brains (the people, not the groundhogs’) are frozen.

The groundhog or woodchuck (Marmota monax) is a member of the family Sciuridae, & they are part of the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots.

Oh, I don’t think anyone is brave enough to hoist a badger up out of its den to take a look at its shadow. Though it would be hysterical to watch some fool try.
