I asked my eldest what she wanted to be when she grew up. She looked at me in amazement and said, “Momma, I’m SIX! I don’t need to worry about that yet.”
Mind you, I’m 80 and have been through several professions, and still don’t know what I want to be!
If you have no idea perhaps you should get any job and work hard for a year or two or maybe join the military and learn discipline. Either may help you decide next steps.
I’ve been in the world for decades, and I’ve given into dead-end jobs and no career. Knowing what to do and what is pragmatic are sometimes quite diverse.
Humans are the only animal species that take care of their offspring for 18,25, at times 40.Every other species on the planet once you can walk, swim or fly.. they kick you out!Pre 20th century, once you hit the 14-16 years of age, you better have a JOB, with a spouse and at least one kid on the way, Today we have people in their 20s sitting in their parents basement thinking they are going to make a fortune having people donate to them while they play fortnight ( fill in any other mindless game)! The real ambitious ones actually think that MEDICAID is a career choice!
Nothing new. Our educational system fails in letting of kids discover what’s out there, what’s available for the next step. How any put in 4 yrs of college and still don’t know what they want to do?
It seems borderline propaganda in how the next generation is told “Do well in school and you are guaranteed a great career. That is the point of education; make money!”
I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up until the age of 37. Then I took steps to achieve that; I was highly motivated. Which is why “traditional” college students hate people who return from the workplace and blow out the grading curve.
Hey! I didn’t know until my SECOND YEAR OF COLLEGE! Then I recieved a Bachelors of Arts in history with a 3.856 GPA AND the “Manny T. Coginos US History Award” from my “writing intensive” course. (No longer sure if that’s the title of the “major award” because dumb@ss Google hasn’t heard of it.)
Oh, the judgmentalism and simplistic worldview of youth! Guess what, young man—life does strange and unpredictable things to you, and a good deal of adaptability is required to make it through.
Didn’t Gordon already have a job at the local garage by time he left High School? I seem to recall an arc where he asked John to help him get a loan, to buy out the retiring owner
