I played cymbals in my junior high band in an arrangement of “Marche Militaire” that only had three crashes. By the time the first came, I was so psyched up the tympanist fell out of his chair and at least one flautist (my sister) lost her place.
It can drive you crazy playing tympani (alias kettledrums) when the score just says, “silent for 40 bars of 3/4, then 60 bars of 2/4, then 4 bars of 2/2, and then come in fortissimo right HERE!”
