One of my operating systems crashed this week so I had to reinstall it. I did a complete clean out, getting rid of the other OS in the process but none of my backups would restore so getting back to normal is taking a while. Luckily the only things truly gone were not that important. I tend to keep important photos, documents and videos on other HDD & thumb drives.
The only thing on my boot drive is the Windows installation. All programs and files are run/saved from an external drive ..which is mirrored by another external drive. If the boot drive crashes and won’t recover I just do a clean install. All files are untouched and programs? Just redirect the icon to where the application is installed.

I keep all my data on USB thumb drives – in addition to not losing data in a crash, I can use it on my main desktop computer (Win 7), my laptop (Win 10) or on the Win 10 computer we bought to share (in addition to each having a Win7 desktop – as I could no longer get tax software for Win 7 and he had a couple of programs he could not update in Win 7). My Win 7 and my Win 10 laptop each have a virtual Win XP machine for some calendar/organizer software (Lotus Organizer) I use which does not work in or exist for the later Windows versions.
I back up my data after each work session onto one of 2 alternating (by day) USB thumb drives – named A and B. (Data drive is H and archive drive of prior years data is G.) On Friday nights I back up the data again onto one of two alternating (by week) USB thumb drives (both named E as never both in the computer at the same time). Then around the 15th of the month I back up the data and the computer onto one of two alternating external hard drives (both named F). On this hard drive I start a new folder every quarter so I have access to the older backups also. Also around the 15th of the month I back up my two computers onto the external hard drive and also make a backup point for each of them in case restoration is needed – and, yes, it has happened.
Husband also backs up – but not as rigorously – but his computers are not used as much as for business as mine are.
