When I was a kid, the boys had to give Valentines to every girl in class, and vice versa. A few years later, stringing every potential date along by pretending you were in love with them was no longer considered a good thing.
We used to have a box in class for Valentines – no one was required to give one to anyone else. I rarely got any, but mom made me give one to everyone in class – talk about looking needy for friends.

Reminds me of the scene in Toy Story 2 when they’re driving around the toy store and somebody asks, “Why is everything pink?”
