For those who’ve never stopped at a dirty gas station to use the restrooms: The restrooms are often on the outside and kept locked. You need to go in to request the key. The key is attached to something way to big to pocket and too undesirable to steal.
I always understood that is was to them clean; one look and you know that isn’t true. My guess is that keeps whatever slim monster that’s growing in there, from getting out.
