Used to work with a guy who had a theory about keeping his job: keep a low profile, and you’ll keep your job because management won’t notice you (he assumed that management had to notice you before it would fire you or lay you off)… I asked him if his theory would also prevent him from getting raises and promotions… he admitted that it could (I could see that it actually did) but he felt that it was safer to blend in with the woodwork…
Didn’t work. When the economy dipped in the late 1980s he got laid off with everybody else. Layoffs were gradual over several years, so his theory might have saved him during the first couple rounds of layoffs, but only to prolong the misery.
