Dan really does need a salve and he needs change shoes and socks each day. Feet perspire and shoes need to be allowed to dry out before wearing them again. if your skin is dry in the winter, drink more water. It really helps.
My husband needed help with his feet. I made him go to the doctor and it ended up to be nerve problems. (I told him it was nerve problems. I looked it up online.)
I can deal with first aid but not with toenails. Luckily we have visiting nurses who do foot clinics every other month and they have the hedge clipper strength toenail clippers needed. Why is it that aging bodies become frailer while aging toenails become more like raptor talons?
If you don’t have any salve, then syrup will do. The sugar kills bacteria, and also enables construction of blood vessels. You can find more about it at the NIH, of course. I’ve found that a bit of sugar reduces the pain, much of which seems to be from a lack of glucose to maintain function, and the resulting chemical signals transmitted along the neural pathways.
Soak the foot in warm saline, I use Kosher salt, 20 minutes, 3X a day. Put the salve on it and wrap it once it’s dry and keep your feet clean and dry. I went through this with my adult son. He allowed his toe to get really bad because he didn’t want to be any trouble.
