I agree that fountain sounds awful.

Excuse me Alice, but old gum is not nature. For that matter, neither is a drinking fountain.

We had drinking fountains like that at my elementary school in the early 60s.

Well, nature can be dirty nowadays. The vast oceans have floating islands of plastic garbage.

Well, the Nature Center is mostly for kids. She’ll be visiting the Fountain of Youth!

Don’t forget to look for the rare miniature silver- beaver tails which have molted off (soda pop can pull tabs)…wait, that was my era. Sigh

I can’t believe the took ’Dilbert" out. Thirteen percent of the population is too thin skinned.

What Thompson did better than any other cartoonist, even Watterson, is capture the basic element of what makes a child a child. Little kids always focus on something that makes no sense, just like the drinking fountain with gum.

When I was about Alice’s age, we went to a nearby mansion and grounds which had been donated to the state and turned into a public garden/museum. What I remember most about it is two Fu Dog statues, the mouths of which were full of bees…

So good, Richard, so good. I remember having this same conversation with my mom. Funny how certain things can stick in your mind and completely overshadow any other highlights or lowlights of the day.

Alice doesn’t truly know what NATURE is, nor even what the Nature Center is, but she sure knows what she hates! And that drinking fountain really does sound yucky….
