We know monsters exist because they have seen them even if mom & pop cannot. [Said monsters are really Unseelie which are generally quite ugly compared to the more beautiful Seelie who are further away.] You see the house lots are within the domain of that mound where the Unseelie hold court. They have kept humans away and no construction happens in that field area.
None of those will go inside a human house. Too much iron in it for them to tolerate.
