Here’s the thing, and there’s really no getting around it; anything you do that move the body can hurt you if you do something wrong with your body. It’s pointless to say people drown while swimming, or people get knee injuries while playing football, because nothing is completely safe. Yoga is, far and away, the best exercise anyone can do. I recommend against joining an advanced class, or watching a video online, but instead find a basic class with a good instructor. We have an 85 year old instructor at my gym. We have a student who is 81. Both these people have spent years in practice and both are in great health. I’m 62 and have been doing Yoga since 2006. I have no back issues, no joint issues, and my mobility is great. There’s people I once worked with who now sport handicap stickers on their cars because they’ve let themselves go. You will not find long term health benefits in any exercise to match that of Yoga.

Don’t be fooled by the rumors that say that yoga is a safe sport. One-fifth of the people who practice yoga in the US report injuries each year.
