Now that I am an old person I have a great deal of sympathy for the attitude of the folks who were old persons when I was a young one. One tends to look back to previous decades with rose colored nostalgia and to forget about things like diseases that are now curable or preventable or social ills that seemed to be getting better not too far back but are taking a sharp turnaround back to the not so good old days.
For the last 6 years we’ve lived in a donut desert. There are two donut shops in town. One is second rate and the other is third rate. We have a 45 minute round trip to the nearest decent shop.
I miss the donuts from the Judy Jane Bakery in the next town over from where I grew up — the town with, like, almost 5,000 people. Never found out if that was the founder’s first and middle names, or first and last names. As a kid, I thought it was the two ladies who worked there. They had free sample cookies for kids when my Dad came in to buy bread. Sigh. The owners retired, the developers leveled it, and put up a Starbucks on the property.

I drive to work at 3:30am, and pass by 5 donut shops…and they’re all closed, until 5am! : (
