In Dire Straits albums, especially the early ones, Mark Knopfler was distinct in his use of rests or gaps in the guitar playing. Guitar Player magazine at the time make a metaphor with El Cid, one warrior who smashed wood with his sword (best of my recollection) and his opponent, who threw a handkerchief in the air, and let it split in twain under its descending weight on his sword .
