When I first moved to Reykjavík, in 1975, stores closed at 6:00 PM Monday-Friday, 12:00 PM on Saturdays, and were closed on Sundays. Yet, somehow, people managed to get all their shopping done. Now there are stores that are open 24/7, but people aren’t buying any more groceries. I don’t see how grocery stores make more money by having the stores open so long.
One Christmas I felt bad, forget what it was, but didn’t have the medicine for it. Thankfully, the drugstore was open and I wished everyone a Merry Christmas and thanked them all for being there.
Years ago I worked in a gas station. It was the Age of Full Service. Besides pumping gas we did lube jobs, oil changes, tires and batteries… One of the guys I worked with did Transcendental Meditation. One day he came back from his lunch break and said to me, “You know, we’re performing a useful service here.” I said yes with a straight face.
With America being as diverse as it is, shouldn’t there be enough workers of different religions to work on other people’s religious holidays?
Personally, when I worked in a couple different hospitals, I loved to work the holidays – it was quiet, the staff were pleasant, and we got paid time and a half with an extra day off with pay — so basically double time and a half, if we didn’t take that extra day off, which was allowed, as we were always short staffed.
Our office has that same complaint. So we stay open late one day. No one comes in. We tried a half day on Saturday. No one comes in. But Monday morning they complain we should be open later and weekends. So we say we are open late and do a Saturday. “Well I’ve got things to do Saturday and need to home by 5.” They say. So I just tune them out….and you need to make an appointment. That leads to a whole new series of complaints….I informed they that they wanted an appointment system. Then they pull….But I need to do it now!

Because store employees aren’t human so they don’t deserve holidays off like everyone else.
