The majority of overtime hours I’ve put in have been spent either waiting or just being there to show engineering involvement. Very little work got done on OT.
If I don’t get paid for overtime (or get a day off in return), I won’t be there. If the overtime isn’t announced on time, I won’t be there either. And no, a day before isn’t on time. By law the employer is required to announce any overtime four days in advance here (not the US, so I don’t know about you guys). Unpaid overtime is against the law. I got taken advantage of once too often to ever let something like this happen to me again. And if every employee would do this, companies wouldn’t get away with understaffing or lowballing, sadly there will always be people who see it as “company loyalty” or “their duty” to do it.
In Canada, you need to give 24 hours notice. Over 44 hours a week, the employer must pay 1 1/2 regular time, double time on Federal holidays, or give equlivent time off at a later date. That is for hourly employees. Does not apply to salaried employees who are paid the same whether they are there or not, but are expected to work 40 hours a week over the time period or anything else specified in their contract.
My SO is working 12+ hour days, seven days a week, for the final two weeks leading up to (US) tax day. There’s no extra money, but The Roads Must Roll!
when the times were good around year 2000 we had mandatory overtime folks would get in by 10am, wait around for the pizza lunch at 1pm say hello to the boss and then leave
Sorry we don’t have a hired letterer. I’m not a good typist, it’s well-known to be hardest to proofread your own stuff and find the mistakes, and it sure seems that readers like to make a big stink out of ‘Ooooh! I found a typo, and that’s all I’m going to comment on.’

Been there. I used to ‘clean data’. It was supposed to be there by eight AM. It never made it. We all left. They were never able to coerce us again.

Should be “And any…” or just “Any…”.

I’ll just sit at my desk and play solitaire while I’m waiting. Better yet, I’ll go home.
