I never hung out. I was busy. Swimming, beach volleyball, and sunning myself at the beach were things I did in the summer, otherwise I was home reading SF&F.
In 8th grade I had a really good group of friends in our small town. What with connections and whatnot, it pretty much covered much of the town. I remember heading out of the house on a regular basis and winding up with all or part of the group at some point but I have no idea how we all migrated together. Teen radar, I guess. (This was back when only Dick Tracy had a portable phone.)
a recent big hullaballoo here involved youngsters gathering in the underground passageway from sapporo station, sitting on the concrete floor, drinking, and generally engaging in stupid young person behavior. my compatriots here in japan always get into a tizzy about things out of what they consider to be the ordinary and the authorities immediately stepped in to put a stop to this major threat to society. when a reporter asked about the latest development, one youngster replied, “bummer”…
