In fairness, there were a lot of people who made a huge, positive difference ecologically in those days. I think of the rivers and some lakes that were so filled with chemicals that they were no longer safe to swim in and in some cases even caught fire. Efforts to clean up the Hudson River (as an example) were wildly successful and well worth the effort. The problem is, few people realized at the time the extent of the problem.
