As a child I had dolls – my sister had stuffed animals.
Somewhere along the way I became the crazy teddy bear lady. Started in college. I lived at home and had a car. My best friend lived in a dorm and did not have a car. When there was something going on off campus I would take her along. My parents did not like the idea of my driving home early in the morning alone – so I would stay overnight on the floor of her dorm room. She had stuffed bear named “Pierre”. We had a stuffed bear at home (I am sure my sister will say it was hers and I took it) that I would bring along to “visit” with Pierre while we were out – his name was Theodore David Bear (Ted D. Bear). Smallest bear under an inch tall, largest one about 3 feet tall.
Suddenly bears took over. I now have hundreds of bears – some teddies, some other types. Stuffed bears, bears made of glass, china, plastic, fuzzy stuff, wood, fabric, furry ones, a transistor radio, drink holders… Bears from the U.S., England, Russia, etc – lots of course from Korea and such where they are made more cheaply, and so on.
They completely take up our spare bedroom and beyond. There is a village of the small ones – mostly figurines and small ones other ones that can stand – which changes more or less by the month (this year less so – midst of changing from Christmas to graduation and wedding). They get their own Christmas tree in the middle of their village.
So an old heart has even more room for best friends – and in my case, luckily a husband who appreciates them.
