I’m sorry, Ladyfingers & Web Spider, that your moms weren’t like Ann…it’s a beautiful gift you can give to YOUR children, or other family members, though! :o) My daughters and I have to laugh, because Ann is just like me and both girls just wallow in the attention when they come home…just like Cathy..lol! December 23, 2007 and Dec. 23, 2008 are 2 of our very favs! Have a Merry Christmas filled with joy!
I don’t know – I don’t think it’s a mom’s job to do everything for her child. It’s her job to lovingly raise her so that she can be a functional and contributing member of society. If the mom feels the need to do everything for someone, I’m sure there are a lot of truly needy people or animals that she could do that for.
Hey, gang! Does anybody else remember an animated Christmas special from Canada called “The Gift of Winter” (1974)? Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner, pre-SNL, did many of the voices. It’s kind of hard to find now (it used to be available on VHS), but you might try YouTube. It’s very sweet and worth looking up.
The reason I bring it up is because you see the obvious influence on Cathy Guisewite’s cartooning style. In fact, one character, a little girl called Tender, is a dead ringer for the early Cathy.
As a mom of 5, all of whom are grown, it is nice for the children to do stuff for their mom, who is tired after all these years. I love it when my children take me out to a nice lunch, and we just enjoy each other’s company. It’s the best gift.

Just imagine the possible flashbacks we could have had with Cathy as a child under this overattentive mother…

Who says stay at home moms don’t have a job?
