No, she read the first set of comics after Charles Schultz, author of Peanuts announced his retirement (no Peanuts comic that day). This was shortly before he passed away.
Note the “We miss you Sparky” on the last panel. Sparky was Schultz’ nickname and he was considered to be one of Cathy G’s inspirations, or so it has been said.
It is really ironic that today’s Cathy’sended strip today shows her bemoaning the end of Peanuts. Schultz ended his for health reasons, Guisewite just quit.
I remember this one and it was a lovely commemoration of indeed a very sad day! I also remember CG on the TV discussing what an inspiration “Sparky” had been for her and many other artists.
And no, gfnv – I don’t think folks have the decency to give meaningful tributes anymore – there were a few that were amusing perhaps but mostly I saw snarkiness (if that can be a word).

Charles Schulz was an inspiration for many, and is still missed. He is a classic.

@WebSpider Thanks for the clarification! I would have missed the reference. Can’t believe it’s been that long.

I didn’t make the connectin either. Just thinking of all the comics that are no more - Annie, Brenda Starr, and Cathy herself.

Cathy had asked Mr. Schulz (Sparky) if she should do the comic she had created. He inspired her to do it.
I too miss Sparky.

Thank you, Mr. Charles M. “Sparky” Schulz, for all the wonderful “Peanuts” memories. I miss them – and you – very much.
