True story: Some guy we know from a rich family, father and mother, but the father’s family is richer (and way deep into politics). When he goes to family reunions on his father side, the young people around his age range are typically managers or entrepreneurs. When someone sits beside him and start to talk, the first thing they’d ask: What position do you have? The guy innocently answers: I work as a teller in a bank. They would spring right away from him and look for someone else to sit with.
I became a programmer when I was in my 40s. Before that I was a heat treater, a skilled trade that involved working with industrial furnaces, red hot metal, getting filthy, lots of heavy lifting, and shift work. At my programming job most of the people I dealt with outside of IT had gone to work in a corporate environment directly from college. They were often creeped out when I described what I used to do. I chuckled silently.
