Then you have weirdos like me that enlisted in a less combat-intensive branch, like the Air Force. But Fate is cruel and has a long memory. I enlisted to avoid beig handed a helmet and a M-16, two years in and I am reassigned to Germany to a Tactical Communications Unit and spent three years running around Germany, playing sillyass wargames and praying that Ivan didn’t get a hankering for a Beer and a schnitzel.
I think the Vietnam draft was the most un-American thing ever foisted on the American people. There was no immediate danger to the US, and depriving citizens of their liberty without due process is unconstitutional. A monument may be a stretch, but I hold no animosity to those who fled. And I respect those who stayed and (peacefully) protested. I respect those who served as well.
I barely missed the draft; it was cancelled when I was 18. If I had been drafted, I would take it as my duty and obligation to the country, to the world, and to truth and peace, to evade the draft by any means necessary, if being a conscientious objector didn’t work out. Vietnam was a war built on lies, misunderstandings, and arrogance, by many nations. “What if they gave a war, and nobody came?” The Vietnamese thought we were like the French, and we thought the North Vietnamese were like the USSR. Neither side bothered to check that out to see if it was true.
1/27/1973 Defense Secretary Melvin Laird announced the end of the US military draft after 25 uninterrupted years. So this ‘toon does not mark an exact anniversary date. I’m still unsure of its intent.

Remember, there was a huge distinction between draft dodgers and draft resisters.

Why is this here? Sure, Trump dodged the draft with his daddy’s wealth, but that’s 50 years ago.

Because patriotism.

We should not be forced to fight in bad wars.
