Cathy Classics by Cathy Guisewite for October 16, 2012

I don’t recall Cathy ever appearing in profile until after the animated TV special in the 80’s. Animators have to determine how to draw characters from angles the creators may have never drawn, so that they can turn. But it’s interesting how, in the first panel, we still believe that Cathy is looking at her Mom. The drawing style is so iconic, that we accept a certain code in it. It’s like the stage cheat, when an actor avoids turning away from the audience, but still appears to focus attention on someone behind.

That ain’t gonna happen. Ignore mom while she’s there? Insane.

I will admit that I do better cleaning when someone is around to provide a sounding board. Otherwise, I’ll talk myself into keeping more. But maybe it’s different with Mom.Good morning, Scott! Better to listen to the voice of common sense, Cathy. It’s there — just filter out the nutty stuff. Oh wait, forgot who I was talking to.

The only “voice in my head” belongs to my Aaron. Best way to describe it is a whisper on a breeze. Nice one, you know?

I’m the exact opposite. While I was working on my office-decluttering project this summer, every time my husband came in for whatever reason, it was nothing but an absolutely HUGE distraction and I couldn’t concentrate to get anything done while he stood there. Only after he’d finally leave could I get back to working.

Aaron: I’m feeling really bummed out tonight because my husband (tired of the ever-rising rates) disconnected our cable t.v. today and now all we’re down to is about 10 channels of local programming. I can catch maybe a handful of things (like “South Park”) online but I can’t find full episodes of one of my favorite shows, “Snapped” (on Oxygen), online anywhere it seems! It’s amazing how attached you can become to something when you’ve had it for so long that when it’s gone, you wonder how you’re ever going to be able to live without it!!! Just wondering if you’ve got anything nice and chocolate-y to lift my spirits? Because I sure could use something along those lines about now! :-(

Hi Cathyites!! I believe CG once said she didn’t draw Cathy in profile because she doesn’t have a nose and it doesn’t come out very well. I could use someone to help me clear out some clutter, but I don’t think it would have been my Mom — and certainly not my husband. His motto is “when in doubt, throw it out.”
