Used to be a game among hackers to discover servers around the world and try to hack into them. I don’t know if it’s still a popular practice.

So, if it were a mistaken attack on their server, wouldn’t that be the antithesis of the act…? Having the skill, intelligence, will, and tools (as well as objective or purpose) to inflict such an attack, but incompetent enough to not verify the IP first?

Not so flattering, could just be trying to add another Zombie for a DDoS attack…

Bots hack randomly. Why not? Doesn’t cost more.

When I was in my 30s, I had a reasonably good handle on what computers could do (or, often enuf, undo). After I turned 40, I started running across things that only people at least 10 years younger than me could understand. I wonder if the same thing happened to them after they turned 40. Of course, they’d all be in their 60s now, and as we all know, none of us understand anything any more.

from an acquaintance who worked in a large black building with mirror-windows, down the street here in Norfolk, va: cybersecurity departments are groups of people that hope someone else doesn’t locate their vulnerabilities for them before they do. there is no such thing as a secure system. they can all be broken if attacked long enough.
