Happy Fourth of July, Americans. Here in the UK, we have our main fireworks celebrations in November to celebrate the failed attempt to blow up our Parliament on 5 November 1605. The fireworks are first heard several nights before the official date and continue for a few nights afterwards. Most fireworks parties are held on the true date of 5 November.
I had to put my dog down yesterday. He was in a lot of pain and had fluid around his stomach. He hated fireworks, as well. Now he is running free of pain over the rainbow and won’t have to worry about those stupid fireworks.
we have WAAAAY too many illegal fireworks going off for weeks sometimes before the holiday… most dogs are already going crazy by the time the 4th rolls around.. and then we all get to spend 7/5 smelling cordite all day. we are too stup id for words
I’ve already seen scared loose animals. I hate fireworks. It’s hot and dry with lots of open space and dry grass here. I always worry about my house burning down. Lots of bottle rockets on my roof.
Love it! I also loved your strip a few years back where Red put earmuffs over Rover’s ears to watch the fireworks. Thanks for the reminder that real love is putting the other one first.
A couple years ago, I was home alone on the 4th with my housemates’ animals. One had a cat and one had a dog. The two did not get along well. I spent the loud part of the evening sitting on the stair landing, with one animal tucked in close on either side of me. They both wanted to be with me, but not with each other! Hey, with only one human for two pets, they had to share.
I saw a YouTube short where a guy urged people to spend their fireworks money on a donation to the local animal shelter. I’d add a veteran’s organization.
It’s bad enough to have explosions going off all night, but the idiots shooting guns into the air are the worst. One year I was standing in front of my garage door watching the fireworks and I could hear gun shots from a few blocks away, then I heard the bullet whiz by my ear and bounce off the door. Dodged a bullet so to speak.

Mom and Dad could do even better. They could not shoot off the fireworks at all. That would really make them happy.

Our senior dog is nearly deaf. You could be shooting fireworks off next door and she would sleep right through them.

Ya know … I’m a grown-ass man with a 90 pound German shepherd who’s freaked out by fireworks, so this really touched me. Great strip.

My family has never set off fireworks. We go watch professionals do it, from a good distance.

I don’t like seeing Rover with his head miserably drooped like that. He’s nervous and anticipating being very scared.
