It’s The Japanese Hundred Yen store. Everything in there is 100 yen – each. A package of 6 AAA batteries – 100 Yen. A container of 100 toothpicks, 100 Yen. And at today’s exchange rate, it’s 141 Yen to the dollar. It’s all relative (including, to where you live).
Everything at a dollar store is near us is now $1.25 (even the things cost .80 in other stores). Still better than another dollar chain where you to find the $3 & $5 items. Or the everything $5 and under store with $10 items.
Our local Dollarama now charges up to $5.00 for some items. I told a cashier recently, as she was scanning each item, that when they first opened all the cashier did was count the items and add the sales tax. She found it hard to believe.
When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s there was a whole category of stores called the “Five and Dimes”, also called “Dime Stores”, where pretty much everything cost between 5 and 10 Cents. I got an allowance of 15 cents a week, and a little patience meant i could get one of their more rare ‘expensive’ toys or I could go for most toys or many kinds of any candy immediately.
I get that with inflation, stores have to adapt. A dollar simply won’t buy what it used to, so I understand if items cost over $1 in the store. What I don’t understand is why so many things are actually MORE expensive at the dollar store than if I just went to my local market. As you can infer, I don’t shop there very often.
The dollar stores around here have items which sell for more than a dollar for some years so with the increase in the cost of everything, they sell for even more now.
I went in to get a sandwich, the store only accepts cards, no cash. I’d had to cancel my cards because my wallet had been stolen. They had a cash tip jar, though.

For an item to retail for $1, that is after wholesale/retail mark-ups, transportation/storage cost so manufacturing cost are likely < $.30.

Our Dollar Tree sells their items for $1.25 but some of the cards are still 2/$1 or $1 each.

Factoid: The Japanese Yen is their equivalent to our Penny.
It says something that we price things in Dollars while Japan prices things in terms of Pennies.
