I wonder if there is a system of governance (short of dictatorship or absolute monarchy) in which politics is not inherent. If so, I don’t know what it is. I’m also going to — and I can’t believe I’m saying this — defend the vast number of politicians at the local level who get into it because a) communities don’t survive with some form of governance and b) they feel it’s their civic duty to help make things run. I’ve known many local politicians who put their careers on hold (or continued to hold down their day jobs and put their personal lives on hold) to serve. One friend served two terms on the local town board and then stepped down. As his wife later said, “Our family put in our time.”
And sure, at the national level, you have to have an ego the size of Texas, and the system under which they work is designed to corrupt them (ie., make them eternally beholden to big money just to win re-election), but even there, there are people who at least want to work for the good of their country.
Like I said, it’s a nasty business, and I can think of several ways to make the system better, but I can’t figure any way to survive as a nation without the politicians. Sigh.
This is the problem with Trump and ascertaining whether he is a liar or just too stupid for his own good. He can’t spell or read so you never know is he believes the lies he states so regularly but can’t keep straight so he believes the next contradicting lie he tells. If their is the possibility of integrity among the very stupid, he has it.
A problem with the American electorate is too many people think that an occasional exaggeration is the same as someone who tells a constant stream of blatant lies.
Don’t lump them together as “everyone lies.” Not everyone pours out lies at the slightest opportunity. Please think twice about supporting any politician who frequently says silly, easily disproven lies. They’re a sign that they’ll lie about the big issues too.

Politicians offend all logic and truth.

Politics is the art of making the truth tell lies in your favor, although these days some have forgone the need for the truth part altogether.

Many forget that lying only works if you use it sparingly.

The RNC officially adopted the position that the events of Jan6 were simply “legitimate political discourse”.
