    I’ve known people to make a habit of opening bags of chips that way. I’ve found the method to be less than optimal.

    We call it “shrink-flation” in this household and it’s not just confined to potato chips. It’s in a lot of products these days.

    My approach is to strain trying to open the top without tearing it down to the base, s my wife looks on 9and,after five minutes, asks if she can help). Followed by a festive rain of chips.

    It shouldn’t do that unless: You’ve smacked the sides and have therefore probably smashed the chips, or; are at a much higher altitude than where they were packed.

    It eases opening the bag if you stick a pin in it first to vent the internal air pressure. Also, it doesn’t crumble the chips the way popping the bag does….
