Here in California, the voters can put issues directly on the ballot (you need lots of money to gather the signatures required). If even half of the issues succeed in getting enough signatures we are going to have a 3 page ballot in ’24.
Mitchell and Webb have a skit about a doctor who cured cancer. When he is approached by a solicitor to donate to a heart disease fund, he explains that he has done his part. He didn’t take any money for curing cancer, no awards – all he wanted is that he never be asked to contribute to anything else the rest of his life.
Same thinking of those who reason that a single voter is only one of tens of millions, perhaps even well over one hundred million votes cast in an election.
If each and every single voter decided that there is no point in voting (and every citizen in our country decides there is zero reason to participate in any sort of citizen political activism), we could return to those halcyon days of feudal patriarchal hierarchy.
It almost certainly would not affect any individual.

Someone tried to get me to sign a petition the other day and I told him I couldn’t because I was from another planet.

Most of the people who come to my door for a signature are trying to make the world worse.

Tell them to roll the petition up, tightly around their pen. It makes the next step much easier.
