There’s a city near me that pays $50,000 for this “study”, $75,000 for that “study”. Study after study after study, year after year. I’ve joked for a long time that they should do a study to see how effective the studies are.
Stopping all the studies would at least be a small step in reducing the size of government. I once took a job doing a study funded by health and human services to interview selected people to find out about smoking in the US. I had parts of SE Ohio. You could have stood on any street corner and found out the statistics.
The only people who benefits from these ‘studies’ are the people doing it. Typically they have their ‘answer’ already in hand, get paid for their study, and they’ll give it as an assignment to some grad student, who comes up with the verbiage for free.
This reminds me of my program to reduce fires. We need to hire more fire investigators. You don’t get it? Every time you hear a report on the news it says, “The cause of the fire is under-investigation .” :)
