Another decent, kind of throwback one! I like that the punchline isn’t “and then the opposite happened” like always, and rather that Marty had a good point until he remembered his own failure and let it get to him hypocritically. Having read lots of old strips recently, this very much feels like one, and the last panel illustrates the reveal and the implications of it well!
8\10, the joke is a 6 or 7 but the extra touches and attempt to not tell the obvious joke raise it to 8!
See, Nate is always like this. He ALWAYS underestimates his own team. This time, Nate was doubtful and his Dad didn’t care. by the time Martin was in the stands, they had switched places. 7/10. Pretty good.
Strip rating: 9/10 The depression factor at the end kinda makes it pretty funny. And that’s coming from someone who has dealt with depression for the last 3 years…
also kids want to win. my son plays socker for 12 yrs now, and explained to me as a teenager why the phrase “it is not important to win but to take part/play good in a team/…” just annoys.

I don’t ever remember going to a school with a winning team. Nate and his dad have that in common.

I still remember some of the friends I made playing chess as a kid.
It’s been years since we’ve talked. I wonder how they’re doing.

Ten panels (including Nate’s drawing) and it gets all the way to the last one before the other shoe drops…….is this a record?……

This is, I believe, fatherhood in a nutshell. You tell your kids what they should hear, but not necessarily what will actually happen.
