Yes, for years, my shillelagh was just a conversation starter. Now it’s what keeps me upright. About a week ago, I didn’t take it with me into the bathroom. I tripped over my own feet and fell backwards into the tub. Then I couldn’t get myself out for almost an hour.
My MIL takes Balance Classes, to help her balance issues. And, she has given in & started using a cane. It was a struggle at first, “b/c it signalled dependence”, but, she found it actually gave her more INdependence, b/c she wasn’t as fearful of falling! AND, everybody else is able to quit worrying about her so much.
In PT following foot surgery, about 5 years ago, they had me doing balance exercises to re-strengthen that foot. These exercises, plus the “motivational posters” in the doc’s office, brought to mind all the falls my mother had as she aged . . . so I got myself a cushion for the balance exercises, and made them part of my routine. I’m surprised/not-surprised to find that it’s easier going down stairs, etc.
Up to about 40, you buy the cutest shoes, from 40 to 65+- you buy the most comfortable shoes. After 65, you choose the ones that are most likely to get you through the day without falling down.

Yoga helps with balance also. While preparing dinner, I will stand on one foot for 20 seconds and then the other. It has made a big difference.

I can so relate, and I have the scars to prove it.
