I think my child, who used to play games on blacktop at grade school, had holes in her knees and the tops of her shoes demolished about every few weeks. Holey jeans were not in fashion yet, but I sent her to school wearing them anyway. She wouldn’t change her play time, so I wouldn’t buy new jeans to replace new jeans. I would have patched them, but she didn’t want me to. As far as shoes, we switched to Doc Martens which can tolerate a lot of abuse.
Went to a parochial school where the girls wore jumpers or skirts. In 1st grade my mother worried about me being cold so she put me in flannel pants under the jumper. Which was great except that at least once a day I’d be on my knees to get my books which were kept in a little cubby under the desk seat. I had holes in the knees of those flannels more than I had whole pants. sigh.

Red’s ahead of his time. Now they sell holey jeans – marketed as “distressed”, and charge extra.
