A petard is a small bomb that was used in ancient warfare to blow up gates and walls. The word “petard” comes from the French word “pétard”. “Pétard” comes from the Latin word “pederare” which means “to break wind” or “to fart”. The phrase “hoist with his own petard” means to be blown up by your own bomb. Just some context!

Well, Kevin, if you say that around grown-ups, you won’t get in trouble, but they might question if it’s you or think you’ve been abducted by aliens and replaced with a smart kid.

Much depends on which adults you say it to. Otherwise you might just get your mouth washed out with soap on general principles.

Mispronounce it as peturd and the adults may even compliment you on the cuteness.
