When we were qualifying with the .38 pistol in USAF OTS, there was one OT who could only hit the target a couple of times. We had three tries to qualify. The guys on either side of him had already qualified and were only shooting for fun. On the third round, the poor shot had five bulls eyes and two near misses out of five. The guys on either side missed their target two and three times respectively.
So that’s why when I once aimed a rifle with scope at an empty milk bottle & fired, the bottle didn’t move, but the one three feet away fell, leading those around to take one big step backward.
Many years ago at an artillery range near Niagara Falls (Canadian side). We were told to quit shooting for the day. Apparently the sail boats out on the water were getting bullet holes in their sails. Whoops!!
Early days in my AF career as an aircrew member used to have to qualify annually on the 38. A couple of us would qualify early (ie hole big enough for multiple rounds so there wasn’t a need to count) so they would put a weak guy between. Guys come combat arms would come around and quietly tell us to pull our shots one way or another to help the guy out next to us so he could qualify. In my spare time used to shot a lot of black powder with the combat arms guys.

The sergeant should be grateful neither Andy or Chalkie was pointing the rifle at him.

Yesterday I leanred that there was an actual live-action TV series of Andy Capp. Sadly, it was not very good.

Well Andy does on occasion complain about Chalkies’ dart game, so he must still have a problem with his accuracy.

It’s even worse when you can’t hit a target with your bayonet!
