The Billy character may be a person with such deep-seated insecurities that he will not be able to accept the changing American culture, and only respond with anger or even hatred. In that case, direct confrontation may not accomplish a thing with this guy. Nothing can change him. Interesting to see how our authors develop this story.

Jerks and evil people are deluded in thinking that they are the good people. I’m sure Hitler thought that he was a modern saint.

I’ve fallen for this kind of triangulation almost all my life. I used to think that if the bullies knew how difficult things were for me and how hard I was trying to be a better person they’d ease up but all it did was fuel their desire to target and destroy

I was a tallish fat kid (now I am a short fat adult – stopped growing taller early) – throw in I was a bit book smarter than other children,so to this day I get confused by things in life in general which make sense to other people – basically I expect everything to be logical. (I will ask husband when I am confused by something “is this a Meryl thing or are you confused also?”) I used to get picked on a lot due to both weight and this seeing things differently than other people.

So I used to get picked on a lot. I learned to just ignore it.
