My wife and I still hold hands after 38 years of marriage. And we’re fond of a memory from a time when we hadn’t been married quite that long. A friend of her parents commented on us holding hands: “Look at that! Married six months and they’re still holding hands!”
And on the theme of the familiarity that comes with a long-term relationship, it also put me in mind of an old cartoon by New Yorker cartoonist Joseph Farris. A naked man, towel over his arm, heading to the shower, walking by his wife in their living room. She’s giving him what I can only describe as an Alice Kramden stare. The caption reads, “. . . and to think we went steady for six months before you had the nerve to kiss me!”
