My dog could not care less when I hear a noise in the house. I used to depend on my dogs in the past to look up, and then go back to sleep. I would feel secure that it was nothing. Something actually fell off the kitchen counter in the middle of the night – my dog did pick her head up for that, halfway, and went back to sleep. I found it on the floor in the morning. I know if we are ever threatened I will have to protect my dog, same as happened when the goose was going to kill her.

Not the average dog response. The guy and the cat, I’m not surprised. Try the cultured approach. ‘Excuse me, may I help you?’ (With a baseball bat in hand).

Yeah, when I was in university (going locally and living at home to save big bucks) my parents were away for a couple of nights and I was alone in the house. Noises always sound louder when you’re alone and it’s dark. Anyway, the dog was with me. When I’d hear a scary noise, I would poke the dog awake so he could listen. When he heard the noise and went back to sleep, I felt a lot better. If he ever acted like something was wrong, I was supposed to phone or go to the neighbor — but I never needed to.
