True story. A couple of weeks ago, I opened a library box just like this one and was stung by a wasp. A large nest had been built inside and I didn’t know. This library was located at an elementary school, and school had just started for the Fall. I’ve never (hard to believe, I know) been stung by a bee so I was somewhat concerned about a severe response. (Two close relative have had anaphylactic reactions to bees.) My hand did swell, and it was pretty painful. I took some antihistamines as soon as possible. To the Vice-Principal’s credit, she took charge and made sure that my hand was iced immediately. She also called the janitor to take care of the nest PDQ. I shudder to think what might have happened if a child had opened that library box instead of me. As strange as it sounds, because I was stung instead, perhaps a child was spared from a severe or possibly an anaphylactic sting. The area where I was stung is still tender.
