Yes, SOME Zoos are still in the dark ages & may as well have mounted animal heads on the walls. But, the overwhelming majority of Zoos are now peopled by forward-thinking, ecologically-minded, preserving the species people. They plan & build exhibits that help keep the animals healthy & active. The food they feed the animals is specially suited to each species & sometimes each individual animal’s nuitritional needs. They have fully staffed & equiped medical clinics to help keep the animals healthy & heal them when they do get sick. They also work together with the bulk of all the other Zoos WORLD WIDE, to preserve & propagate species. And have teaching classes, where we can all learn how to be better humans in our animal populated world, towards animals, ecology & each other. And, this is just off the top of my head, before the morning coffee has fully kicked in. It is an archaic belief, promoted by single-brain-celled, so-called animal rights proponents, that Zoos are just prisons.
It depends on the zoo and the animal. For the most part, zoos in this country care for and treat the animals well as well as providing safe and challenging environments for the animals. Some of the animals were born in captivity (for better or worse) and would not survive in the wild. No absolutes: some are good and some are not good.
