When I was in Second Grade and asked my father what “FBI” meant, he feigned a serious expression and said it meant “Fat Bellied Irishmen.” (Who was I to know otherwise?) It just so happened that not long after, my teacher asked our class that question, and I proudly raised my hand with that answer! (—

When I got into the Air Force, I needed a security clearance, so the FBI was asking all my former neighbors and my ex-boss about me. They were all sure I was under suspicion of some crime.

The FBI spent several weeks interviewing people. This is about two weeks longer than they were allowed to vet Supreme Court justice nominees, and there was no restriction as to who the FBI could talk to.

At one time I tried to apply to the FBI. After a few questions, I had to accept that I could not be hired. They required people to be at least 5’8". That was one way to keep out most women right there. They have probably dropped that limit by now, but after I got off the phone I was livid that they could have a restriction like that.
